Love
November 01, 2008, 01:57

I was very happy to have been able to catch up with P this evening. Yet, at the same time I feel a tinge of sadness because shes leaving Sg so soon. Perhaps absence does make the heart fonder.

Tonight, I was thinking about what love was and found these two beautiful quotations from the late Thomas Merton:

“the beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them.”

“love seeks one thing only: the good of the one loved. It leaves all the other secondary effects to take care of themselves. Love, therefore, is its own reward.”

Perhaps our relationships would be richer and more fulfilling if we begin to learn how to love the nearest and dearest to us unconditionally. love is our destiny. We are not inanimate creatures. We are all called to love.

Where do we go from here? I am not certain. But with a lot of effort and truest in divine providence, I am sure that things will only turn out for the best. I'd like to share this prayer:

Thomas Merton's Prayer

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
