Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Watched the film Vicky Christina Barcelona this afternoon at Cineleisure with some friends. Once again, the film displayed the mastery of its two directors, Pedro Alemovar and Woody Allen. The use and display of narration , the unresolved ending as well as the complexities of human relationships within the film make it easy to follow but still very real as well.
The main issue which the directors of the film sought to evoke in the audience was to throw back at us two of the common approaches which we take towards love. There are times when we are unsure who we are looking for in a partner. What is certain is that we know what we do not want! As such, we move from relationship to relationship, afflicted by chronic dissatisfaction. Our relationships are marked by brevity as we flit from one place to another. Our relationships are marked by transient happiness, with no real fufilment.
There are also times when we look more for stability than love in a partner. We are afraid of uncertainty, so much so that when the opportunity for us to be with someone we love, we draw back because we are constrained by societal expectations or simply by a fear of the unknown. Will we have the courage to love?
Set in the beautiful city of Barcelona, the film is a wonderful analysis of human nature and its complexities and leads one to question our preconceptions of commitment, love and even social constructs about how relationships should be structured. It is a story of how two people looking for love found it, but chose to leave it because of their predetermined insecurities and fears. Will we ever be with someone we truly love?
