Chinese New Year
February 11, 2008, 21:28

Memorable things that happened over Chinese New Year:

Friday: Went with L to Mt Sophia where we explored the Old School Building, the former MGS school building which has been converted into a creative arts space, with photo galleries sitting aside art galleries, animation firms and even the Singapore Philharmonic Orchestra. With its simple black-white combination, the entire building exudes a quiet atmosphere of creative vibrancy and zen. What I liked most was the quadrangle of the building, a patch of green field with trees towering over it, evoking one's imagination of the 60's/70's when pupils would lounge around or play under the shade of their trees.

We saw the studio of the late Chua Ek Kay. A spartan space drenched in white, with only a few of his works on display, the studio was pretty non-descript.

We also saw Bistro Gaga, the former canteen of the school now converted into a restaurant. It was closed that day. But I hope to go there soon.

Thereafter, we drove on to Mount Sophia where we hung out at Wild Oats and got tormented by the crafty resident cats who ignored us at first, but started to gather round after the food was served and even tried to distract us so that they could have a go at our food.

Sat:

Brought L to Sarah's and Linus' house party. Although smaller than the number who showed up at the Xmas party the previous year, the company was equally good. Met many interesting people from various walks of life, bankers, civil servants, a stage actress and even an anathesiologist visiting from Perth! The conversation was good and I even had an exciting time playing Pictionary. As evidence that Singapore is a very small place, I was spotted by an ex-USP classmate and L met her long-lost secondary schoolmates. One of the guests even found her long-lost ex-flatmate after 3 years! As usual, it was amazing to see how people took to each other even though they did not know each other previously.

Sun:

Was quite honoured to be invited to NN's place for tea. NN's family was very warm and friendly and I think they have a genetic disposition to very good humor. A family I wish I had as well. Games were devised (I won some), jokes were told and of course there was cooing over the 2 year old toddler, TT who monopolised all the attention in the house. The Cantonese chatter was soothing also. A simple, yet very heartwarming party.

There was a tearful reunion in the evening as we made contact with an estranged aunt. Somehow, we need to understand that our life is finite and that it can be really unhealthy for our soul if we keep all that anger and grudges in us. Being able to let that go is something that can be quite liberating.

Going to the gym this week to work out.

In the next few weeks, I hope to be able to do a few things:

Finish the German Course and persuade the administrator to promote me to the next level

Sign up for a Salsa Dance course

Watch a film
